Q:  What exactly is iGotChat?
iGotChat is a SmartPhone-to-SmartPhone messaging and chat application that works with your existing internet data plan.
Since it uses the same data plan that you use now there is no additional cost to send messages to your friends. iGotChat also has some unique features like group chat that standard SMS and MMS text messaging applications do not have. iGotChat currently works with Apple iPhone and iPod Touch devices as well as Android based mobile devices.

Q:  What makes iGotChat different than traditional SMS / MMS?
There are numerous reasons. Here are a few:
  • iGotChat has fully integrated group chat. Not only can you chat with more than one person at the same time, all the messages stay integrated into one chat thread so that all users in the group chat can see the all user responses.
  • iGotChat works with your existing internet and data plan so there is no additional charges. You can bypass your provider’s text messaging fees.
  • iGotChat has Group Distribution Lists you can define and quickly send messages.
  • Easily share pictures, share your location (GPS enabled devices) and send contact information (VCards) from your contact application.
  • Send pokes to your friends. Pokes are fun, meaningful, icons that can greatly enhance the user messaging experience. Try it once and you will be hooked!
  • Message Blocking – iGotChat allows you to block incoming messages from those pesky people that won’t ever leave you alone. Stalker, Ex – we got you covered!

Q:  Will I be charged text messaging fees with iGotChat from my provider?
As long as your send your messages with iGotChat, you should not encounter any text messaging fees. However, make sure you understand your specific provider’s Data Roaming and Data plan, as we are not responsible for any charges related to those. iGotChat runs on your existing internet and data plan so there should be no additional charges outside of those.

Q:  What mobile devices is iGotChat compatible with?
It is currently available for Android, iPhone and iPod Touch devices. For iPod Touch devices WIFI is required.

Q:  iGotChat is really cool, how can I let others know about it?
We agree! In iGotChat --> Settings there is a “Tell a Friend” option, which you can use to email information about the application to your friends.

Q:  Do both the sending and receiving party have to have iGotChat installed?
Yes. Since all incoming and outgoing messages are routed through our servers all parties have to have the application installed. It is currently available for any Android, iPhone and iPod Touch device.

Q:  Will I be charged any Data Roaming fees when using iGotChat?
Possibly. iGotChat uses the same internet data plan that you use for web and email. If you would normally get data roaming charges when traveling abroad / overseas for email and web, iGotChat would be no different. Of course it would be free to use over a Wi-Fi connection. To confirm that your data roaming is disabled, go into your device's settings for Data Roaming and make sure it is set to Off.

Q:  What countries do you support?
iGotChat should work in all of them although it is currently only available in English translation. We are working on translating to other languages. If you know of any issues in your particular country please let us know and we will try to resolve it.

Q:  I am not getting any incoming messages.
This is most likely due to not confirming your account via the email that was sent to the email address entered during account setup. Please check your email and verify your account. Also make sure you don’t have Blocking turned on for your Friends. Check the Friend record and make sure “Block Incoming Messages” is turned off. If you have confirmed your email and are still not getting messages please reset (power off and on) your device.

Q:  I cannot send any messages.
Here are a few things you can try:
  • If you just recently setup your iGotChat Account make sure you verify your account via the email that was sent to the email address you used during account setup.
  • Make sure you have a cellular or WIFI connection.
  • Reset your device (power down and up)

Q:  Why am I not getting any notifications (Apple devices only) for incoming messages?
Make sure you have Notifications turned on. On your device (not the application) go to Settings --> General --> Notifications and make sure notices are turned on for iGotChat.

Q:  I have an unlocked or jailbroken Apple device and notifications are not working.
If your iPhone is unlocked or jailbroken and it was never properly activated with Apple, it is very common for those devices to have push notifications problems. You should visit here to get that resolved. Be sure to delete and re-install a fresh copy of the application on your device after applying a push fix solution!

Q:  Do you support iPod Touch Devices?
Yes. However, WIFI will be required to receive or send messages. iGotChat is designed with a store and forward methodology so if you send a message when WIFI is not available it will be saved until your WIFI connection is re-established at which time it will be sent.

Q:  How can I change my iGotChat account username?
After your account is setup the only way to change your UserName is to delete your account and setup a new one. Please visit Manage My Account for available options.

Q:  How can I change my email address in iGotChat?
Go to Settings-->User Settings to change your email address. Please note that you will be required to re-confirm your email address again before you can send or receive messages if you change your email address.

Q:  Why is email required?
Email is required for security reasons. We want to insure that the person setting up the account is really the person that will be using the account. We will never sell or market to your email address. It is also used for our unique “Search for Friends” feature.

Q:  Why doesn’t the “Search for Friends” feature find some my friends?
iGotChat uses the email addresses stored in your contacts to search our database of users and return all matching entries. However, for privacy reasons each user can turn on the privacy feature found in User Settings to prevent others from finding them. If a friend is using iGotChat and cannot be found it is because the email address you have doesn’t match the one they used when setting up their account or they have Privacy turned on. We do not store or save the email addresses from your contacts.

Q:  How can I block someone from sending me further messages?
Have a stalker or someone you don’t want to receive messages from.?! To prevent incoming messages simply setup a Friend entry for the user you want block and turn “Block Incoming Messages” on. This will notify our servers that you don’t want to receive messages from this UserName and future messages will not be delivered.

Q:  How come the “Share Location” feature is not always accurate?
The accuracy of the Share Location feature is completely dependant on your particular device. Some devices are more accurate than others. Unfortunately, we have no control over accuracy of the GPS on the device.

Q:  Can I send pictures with iGotChat?
Yes, sending of pictures is supported.

Q:  How do I remove recipients from a group chat?
You cannot remove recipients from an existing chat thread. This is by design. Start a new Chat with just the users desired. If this is a new chat simply backspace or select the desired recipient button and take the appropriate action.

Q:  How do I add recipients to an existing chat?
Simply press the plus button (+) in an existing chat to show the recipient bar and add the new recipient. This new recipient will now get all the new messages associated with this chat. Previous messages in chat thread will not be sent to new recipients.

Q:  How do I define a profile picture for people sending me messages?
Setup a Friend entry and link it to your Contact list for that person. Make sure a profile picture is defined for that person in your contact application.

Q:  Can I setup privacy on my account so that others cannot find me with “Search for Friends”?
Yes. Under User Settings turn Privacy On.

Q:  How can I adjust the text size in the message bubbles?
There are four different text sizes available under User Settings – Chat Text Size.

Q:  What is Polling Interval and how does it work?
This determines how often the application looks for new messages on our servers. Multiple options are available.

Q:  Can I set iGotChat to not automatically save incoming / outgoing images to the camera roll?
Yes. Under User Settings – Media there are two options that pertain to media.

Q:  I got a new device, how do setup iGotChat using the same account information I used previously?
For Apple devices just synch (via iTunes) your applications onto your new device and launch iGotChat. The application will sense a new device and ask if you want to move your account to this new device. Respond yes and continue with setup. The account will be disabled on the old device.

For Android devices: If you use a backup service, restore the app following the instructions of the particular service you use. If not, you can re-download the app from the marketplace and create the account using the same (identical) Username and email address.

Q:  I lost my device, how can I delete my iGotChat account.
If trying to setup iGotChat on a new device simply follow the FAQ titled “I got a new device, how do setup iGotChat using the same account information I used previously?“ This will essentially disable the account on the lost device.

If you really want to delete your account please visit Manage My Account. Deleting your account will permanently remove it from our system so use caution before doing so. Install the application on your new device and when it requests account setup information use exactly the same account information that was used previously. After deleting your account please setup your new account as quickly as possible to avoid someone else using the same user name.

Q:  I never received an email confirmation when setting up my iGotChat account for the first time?
Emails from our server are sent from within a few minutes of the account creation. If you have not received the email within a reasonable amount of time (30 minutes):
  • First, confirm the email address you used in the app is correct.
  • Second, confirm your email client did not filter the message as spam or junk mail.
  • Finally, send an email from the email address used to igotchat@cantcha.com that includes your user name and a description of the problem.

Q:  I entered the wrong email address when setting up my iGotChat account, how can I fix it?
Go to Settings-->User Settings to change your email address. Please note that you will be required to re-confirm your email address again before you can send or receive messages if you change your email address.

Q:  Will iGotChat work for Apple iPad devices?
The current version will run in simulator mode on iPad. We hope to have an iPad specific version released later this year.
